Basefarm 5.5 stars Emerce100

As a new name it is an honour to stay on a list of best businesses, but winning the very same competition you just entered is even better! Each year the Dutch e-commerce platform Emerce publishes the best e-businesses. Basefarm got the highest score within its category and is distinctly proud of that.

Basefarm debuts in this 2018 edition of the Emerce100, making its first appearance since Emerce introduced the listing in 2005. Now we know it is not only a debut: Basefarm managed to get the highest score within the category ‘Hosting Shared & Managed’, jointly occupying first place with Dutch hosting provider Byte. Basefarm was awarded an average of 5.5 stars, scoring at least five out of a maximum of seven stars for each benchmark.

“ We, the entire team from Basefarm Netherlands, are very pleased with this nomination. It demonstrates that our clients are happy with the quality and the added value of the services we deliver, and this is  precisely what we strive for, every day…. And we are naturally also very happy that our efforts are publicly being acknowledged with this nomination”.

Chris Jansen, Country Manager Basefarm Netherlands

After Basefarm’s top placement in the Whitelane and PA Consulting’s IT Outsourcing Survey 2018, this is further evidence that Basefarm is doing the right things for its customers and will continue developing, managing and running IT solutions critical to the missions of its clients worldwide.

Petter M. Tømmeraas appointed as Senior Vice President for Basefarm’s Data Center Business

22-05-2018
Press release:
A leading European Managed Service Provider, has appointed Petter M. Tømmeraas as Senior Vice President for Basefarm’s Data Centre Business.

Aims to continue building on unique combination of successful colocation business with added IT Operations support

London – 22 May 2018. Basefarm, a leading European Managed Service Provider, has appointed Petter M. Tømmeraas as Senior Vice President for Basefarm’s Data Centre Business.

After four years at Green Mountain, Petter M. Tømmeraas will now focus on continuing to build on Basefarm’s successful data center business area, where one single organisation is supplying both data center colocation services and enterprise-critical operations support.

“Many companies are moving away from managing their own IT operations and infrastructure and instead are looking to use external partners with expertise in areas like cloud services and big data to operate their enterprise-critical IT. This trend makes my new job very exciting,” said Tømmeraas. “Because Basefarm is more than a fixed supplier of data center services, we can take over and automate operational tasks and keep costs under control and have a flexible infrastructure than a standard colocation supplier.”

“We rarely see customers looking for only colocation today, although we are of course happy to provide that service as well, and for many it’s only a matter of time before they also start using managed cloud services. Transitioning to Basefarm as a supplier of mission critical, hybrid cloud solutions is really quick,” continued Tømmeraas .

“With regards to the market we are addressing we are seeing interest from a lot of players at the moment. The hyperscalers and other global players are looking for good partners to set up edge data centers, service providers are increasingly moving into large colocation facilities and the enterprise market has mostly stopped building their own data centers at a high cost to focus more on their own solutions and services instead of having to focus on power, cooling and physical security,” concluded Tømmeraas.

Tømmeraas has a bachelor’s degree in international business with a major in economics, administration, law and international marketing. Since 1998, he has worked in the fields of IT and telecommunication services, in which data center services have always been an integral part of this spectrum of services. Before joining Basefarm in February 2018 Tømmeraas worked as Chief Sales Officer at Green Mountain.

While you were busy with GDPR – the US CLOUD Act was passed, and it has significant impact for European organisations

For the past months everyone has been focusing on the GDPR deadline the 25th of May . In the meantime the passing of another important new privacy and security legislation, with big implications for European businesses using cloud services from US tech giants, went almost totally unnoticed.

For the past months everyone has been focusing on the GDPR deadline the 25th of May . In the meantime the passing of another important new privacy and security legislation, with big implications for European businesses using cloud services from US tech giants, went almost totally unnoticed.

On 22 March the so called CLOUD Act (Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data) was passed by the US congress, as part of a 2232-page, $1.3 trillion spending bill.

The Microsoft Ireland Case

Initially born out of a longstanding conflict between Microsoft and the US government over handing out user data, the CLOUD Act has been hailed as a necessary overhaul of the US’ outdated digital privacy and security legislation. As GDPR, the CLOUD Act should definitely be on every European organisation’s mind, as it affects what could happen to personal data placed with US cloud providers like Microsoft, Amazon and Google.

It was the data privacy issues highlighted by United States v. Microsoft Corp. also known as the Microsoft Ireland case – which really paved the way for the CLOUD Act. The case argued that Microsoft had to hand out private user data stored on servers in Dublin. Microsoft initially lost the case in 2013, only to win an appeal in 2016. The US Department of Justice then requerecently the case was declared moot and thrown out.

However the longstanding and very public case, initiated a discussion in Congress about the need for an overhaul of digital privacy legislation. Everyone was in agreement that the laws, which were from the 1980s,  was not fit for purpose. New legislation giving clarity as to which laws apply when it comes to who has the right to access data stored in the cloud, was badly needed.

Unbelievable Machine opens AWS competence center in Frankfurt

The unbelievable Machine Company (*um), German innovator in digital infrastructure, has opened a third competence center in Frankfurt/Main.

Berlin/Frankfurt, May 2017 – The unbelievable Machine Company (*um), German innovator in digital infrastructure, has opened a third competence center in Frankfurt/Main. The center is a base from which the technology specialist can operate Amazon Web Services (AWS) and develop customized client solutions for the use and application of hybrid cloud solutions.

*um’s new AWS competence center is located in the heart of the Main metropolis, close to the central station (Am Hauptbahnhof 10). Behind the historic facade of the once almost legendary “Hotel d’Angleterre” (“Englischer Hof”) now lies a modern infrastructure for the technology provider’s services.

“Opening our own powerful AWS competence center in Frankfurt was an obvious and sensible step to take. We work for a large and important client there and have already attracted new clients in the area, all of which have huge demand for consultation and operation capacities”, explains *um’s founder and CEO Ravin Mehta. “We will meet their requirements in more than one way: Since we are an AWS competence partner and have already been operating one of our datacenters in Frankfurt for a long time, we are able to offer unique hybrid solutions from private cloud and public cloud services.”

The Frankfurt center has been operating with ten permanent employees since the beginning of May, and *um is expecting growth in the near future; the company is already looking for new staff, including data engineers, data and AWS architects, as well as DevOps experts.

SJ chooses Basefarm

Strengthens security efforts through centralised log monitoring service, based on machine learning, allowing analysis and reporting of thousands of IT security events per second.

SJ chooses Basefarm for automated information security support

Strengthens security efforts through centralised log monitoring service, based on machine learning, allowing analysis and reporting of thousands of IT security events per second.

SJ has entered into an agreement with IT Operations supplier Basefarm. The contract covers security services to further strengthen security and build an operative ability to monitor and manage up to 10,000 events per second. The agreement comprise monitoring and management of the central log service as well as an SOC service integrated with SJ’s normal Service Desk function.

The solution SJ has chosen contains machine learning for fast analysis of trends and potential threats. SJ’s investment is a response to the new IT security demands in GDPR and the NIS directives as well as internal ISO 27001-ISO work. The solution will help SJ continue to keep full control of security, as demands for digitalization, speed and integrity increase.

“Our function is growing and we are quickly becoming more dependent on increased digitalization,” said Willy Stjernudde, responsible for IT security at SJ. “To meet our customers’ demands and live up to external requirements like GDPR and the NIS directive, we need to find automated solutions to continue delivering high security and privacy. In the near future we will manage around 10,000 events per seconds, so we need a support system that will allow us to oversee and analyse such large data volumes in real time.”

Security logs are collected from different sources such as networks, digital channels and IoT units on SJ’s trains. Basefarm is supporting SJ by making available relevant technical competence, through a certified SOC service and a Nordic supply when it comes to consultants and data centres.

The SJ solution uses machine learning to identify potential deviations. If an anomaly is identified the security team at SOC is alerted, and as they are available around the clock, they will immediately analyse and implement necessary actions to solve the problem.

SJ SOLUTION IMPLEMENTED AT RECORD SPEED

“From signing the agreement, it took three weeks for everything to be in place,” said Willy Stjernudde. “That has to be some kind of record, and we are very happy with the way Basefarm, and the other partners, have handled the process. Basefarm lives up to all the requirements we have on a supplier, including local storage and expertise, agility, experience and cost.”

Thanks to the new solution SJ can act in accordance with new legislation in an efficient way, when it comes to discovery and reporting of security incidents, especially relating to personal data.

“We’ve had a dialogue with SJ for some time as we realised our competence, experience and capacity was a good match to their tough demands,” said Fredrik Svantes, Head of Security Operations at Basefarm. “SJ is also a perfect example of a business where digital ability becomes a decisive factor for consumer experience. Now that the first project is in place, we’re currently working with SJ to further develop and increase our collaboration, which will benefit both business and consumers.”

Basefarm tops prestigious client satisfaction survey

Whitelane and PA Consulting Nordic survey shows Basefarm is number 1 in Account Management Quality and number 3 in general client satisfaction

Oslo, Stockholm, April 25th, 2019: Basefarm clients in the Nordic region are very satisfied, results from the Whitelane Research and PA Consulting annual client satisfaction survey reveal. In the Account Quality Management category, no other IT service provider in the region has more satisfied clients. In addition, Basefarm keeps climbing in the general client satisfaction category and has now earned a top three spot.

“We have great respect for the independent Whitelane and PA Consulting survey as it is both professionally executed and measures the most important factor to us – client satisfaction,” Fredrik Ohlsen, CEO of Basefarm, said. “It is encouraging to see that client responses result in improved ranking year on year. Our experts work in close collaboration with our clients and together we are able to design and implement successful digitalization projects. These survey results prove that this way of working is the right way to go in today’s fast-paced business and IT climate”.

Whitelane and PA Consulting surveyed customer satisfaction among more than 330 enterprises. There were 35 IT service providers examined, including several billion-dollar companies. In the Account Management Quality category clients gave Basefarm the best rating (82 %) of all service providers. In the Business Understanding category, Basefarm also received the best service provider rating (78 %) together with Accenture.

One of the strongest trends that the survey results reveal is that service providers in general need to become better at helping clients in their business transformation initiatives.

”Basefarm thinks that it is a fair expectation, as IT and business departments now need to work together more than ever before,” said Fredrik Ohlsen. ”Here, we are dedicated at keep attracting and developing our expertise around AWS, Azure and GCP and how they work in sync with client applications, processes, data and other cloud models. That way we can keep being a truly independent provider that always suggests the most efficient solution to each individual client”.

Looking at the general client satisfaction rating across all categories, Basefarm ranks as number three (76 %). India based Tata Consultancy and USA based Salesforce are the only companies that ranks higher (both get a 77 % rating). The average score across all service suppliers is 68 %, which is the same as in last year’s survey. 72 % of the responding companies say that they expect to outsource IT services to the same extent or more during the coming two years.
